Tottenham Hotspur, established in 1882 and based in North London, has a rich football history, though their journey in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) has seen both highs and lows. The club first entered the European Cup in the 1961-62 season, following their success in the 1960-61 English First Division. At that time, they were one of the few teams to have won a European trophy, lifting the UEFA Cup Winners’ Cup in 1963.

The early years of Spurs in the competition were characterized by their solid performances, but they struggled to make a significant impact. Their campaign in the 1961-62 season saw them reach the quarter-finals before being eliminated by Benfica, who would go on to win the tournament. It wasn’t until the 1980s that Tottenham made a more notable push in European competitions, albeit still falling short in the UCL.

Tottenham’s resurgence in the Champions League began earnestly in the 2010s. Under manager Harry Redknapp, the club qualified for the Champions League for the 2010-11 season, marking a significant milestone for Spurs and their fans. This campaign was remarkable as Tottenham finished fourth in the Premier League, earning their first UCL appearance since its rebranding from the European Cup.

They made headlines by reaching the quarter-finals in their inaugural season in the UCL, defeating AC Milan 1-0 in the second leg at the San Siro, ultimately progressing on aggregate. Despite falling to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals, the journey re-established Spurs’ presence in European competition.

The appointment of Mauricio Pochettino in 2014 marked a new era for Tottenham Hotspur in the UCL. The Argentine manager focused on blending youth development with a solid tactical foundation, enabling Spurs to embark on a progressive path in Europe.

In the 2016-17 season, Spurs reached the knockout rounds after facing a tough group that included Bayer Leverkusen and Monaco. Although they fell short against Juventus in the Round of 16, their groundwork set the stage for future successes.

Pochettino’s tactics and investment in player development bore fruit in the 2018-19 season. They topped their group, moving onto the knockout stage confidently. The Round of 16 saw them face Borussia Dortmund, whom they dispatched with a convincing 4-0 aggregate victory.

In the quarter-finals, Spurs faced Manchester City in a thrilling two-legged encounter. The first leg ended in a 1-0 victory for Spurs thanks to a stunning strike from Son Heung-min. The second leg saw a dramatically fluctuating scoreline, culminating in a late goal from Fernando Llorente that put Tottenham into the semi-finals on aggregate.

2019 signified a historic moment in the club’s history. Spurs reached their first-ever UCL final, facing Liverpool on June 1, 2019, at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium in Madrid. The match commenced dramatically with a controversial early penalty awarded to Liverpool, converted by Mohamed Salah.

Despite a spirited performance, Tottenham could not find the back of the net, falling 2-0 as Divock Origi sealed Liverpool’s victory late in the match. While the result was disappointing, the journey to the final galvanized the club’s identity, uniting fans and showcasing the potential of Pochettino’s style.

Following their UCL final appearance, Tottenham faced challenges, including inconsistency in La Liga and the disappointing start to the following season. Pochettino’s tenure came to a bittersweet end in November 2019 after a series of poor results, leading to José Mourinho’s appointment.

Mourinho faced a complex challenge of rebuilding a squad while juggling Champions League ambitions. The 2020-21 season saw Spurs reach the knockout stages once again, highlighted by an impressive performance against Manchester City in Group Stage and a strong showing against various European teams. However, they were ejected in the Round of 16 by RB Leipzig, marking a disheartening end to another Champions League campaign.

As of the 2021-2022 season, Tottenham continues to strive for European prominence again. Under the guidance of Nuno Espírito Santo, and later Antonio Conte, the team aimed to reclaim its status in both domestic and European competitions. The club aimed for a proactive UCL approach that would reinvigorate its identity.

Tottenham’s 2021-22 season had its moments, yet they faced significant hurdles early in the group stages. Despite their efforts, the club finished third in their group, which saw them relegated to the Europa League. The subsequent seasons see Tottenham pushing for the renewed aspirations of making a more substantial mark in the UEFA Champions League, reflecting the ambition that the club traditionally embodies.
